CF Guidelines - Gastrostomy Care

    Care of a Gastrostomy site:

-
Equipment required:

-
Clean warm water.

-
Gauze swabs.

-
Procedure:

-
Place the patient in a comfortable position, preferably lying flat. Remove or loosen any clothing covering the gastrostomy site.

-
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water and dry them.

-
Arrange equipment beside the patient.

-
Using the gauze soaked in warm water, wipe around the gastrostomy stoma site, ensuring that any debris or discharge is removed.

-
Dry the stoma site thoroughly.

-
Follow manufactures guidelines regarding rotation of gastrostomy.

-
Do not cover the gastrostomy site with any dressing unless there is heavy discharge or leakage present - contact nurse for advise.

-
Do not use any lotions, creams or powder around the stoma site.

-
Any signs or soreness or leakage should be reported to the medical team.

-
Notes:

-
Established gastrostomy sites can be cleaned in the bath or shower.

-
Balloon devices should be checked weekly to ensure the correct amount of water is in the balloon - this is normally performed by the patients or the parents.

Replacing/checking of water in a Gastrostomy tube balloon:

-
Equipment:

-
2 x 10ml syringes.

-
Cooled boiled water.

It is important that the gastrostomy tube is either held or taped firmly in place during this procedure to avoid accidental removal of the tube.

-
Procedure:

-
Wash and dry hands thoroughly.

-
Draw up the correct sterile or cooled boiled amount of water into one of the syringes - the correct amount is 5ml of water.

-
Attach the other syringe to the inflation port of the gastrostomy tube.

-
Gently withdraw all the water from the balloon.

-
Check the amount of water.

-
Remove the syringe and discard the water.

-
Attach the syringe - with the sterile or cooled boiled water - to the inflation port and instil the water into the balloon.

-
Remove the syringe from the inflation port whilst maintaining pressure on the syringe to prevent back flow of the water.

-
If concerns check position at gastrostomy with pH paper.
